A Heartburn Diet Has Cured My Constant Heartburn - But Does It Have to Be Forever?
By John R Turner

It is generally well accepted that the most effective way of dealing with constant heartburn is by making changes to your diet. Cutting back on spicy food, avoiding acidic drinks and improving your digestion will soon get acid reflux under control and prevent those continual episodes of burning pain and discomfort.

I have written extensively about the changes I made to my diet and the success it brought. I had gotten into a cycle of suffering acid reflux and popping antacid pills to control it. The problem was that my research indicated that my regular use of antacids was probably contributing to the problem. The problem is not really the acid, your body needs acid in your stomach to help it to digest food. The problem is keeping acid where it should be - in the stomach.

In brief I made some very simple changes to my diet and style of eating

  • I ate smaller meals so that my stomach wasn't over full
  • I cut out spicy food
  • I cut fizzy drinks to avoid bloating
  • I increased the fiber in my diet to make my digestive system more effective
  • I used natural honey to soothe the symptoms of heartburn while my body rebalanced
  • I reduced acidic foods such as citric fruit
  • I cut down on chocolate which is know to relax the valve that separates your stomach and esophagus

The results were very good. Within a week of starting the changes I was getting far fewer attacks and the attacks of acid reflux were much milder. After a month my indigestion and constant heartburn had all but gone.

If you are really sick & tired of gruelling acid reflux, heartburn or GERD this may be the most critically important message you will ever read. Your acid reflux can be controlled through natural means!

If you are sick of your esophagus feeling like it is on fire ... if you are tired of the bitter taste of stomach acid and bile ... if you are fed up with trying to sleep propped up on a mound of pillows ... It is time to read Stop Acid Reflux Now.

Even better it stayed away.

The only problem was I was cutting out many of the things that I really enjoyed, and as other people were saying to me that the heartburn diet worked but meant they missed some foods I decided to do an experiment. Just for the cause of scientific research (and because I fancied a huge binge) I came off my heartburn diet completely for a weekend.

I went out for a curry with some friends and thoroughly enjoyed a very spicy vegetable dansak. I washed it down with two pints of beer. Then I went on to the cinema where I ate popcorn, nachos with extra jalapenos and a bucket of coke. Difficult as it was I even forced myself to eat some chocolate. How I'm willing to suffer just to bring you solidly researched information.

The Result
I had thoroughly indulged with all the things that I knew were triggers for my heartburn. So did I suffer acid reflux that evening?

I'm afraid the answer is - yes.

But the really good news is that it was very mild. The even better news is that I returned to my heartburn diet the next day and the symptoms immediately went.

The Conclusion
Sticking to a good heartburn diet will not completely protect you from the occasional binge, but it does mean that you quickly can regain control. The symptoms really were very mild and controlled by drinking water to flush the acid back to the stomach and eating a spoonful of natural honey to soothe the pain.

I will certainly allow myself an occasional break from the diet so that I can still enjoy my favourite foods, but perhaps I won't include all of the heartburn triggers in one evening. Or there again maybe I will.
