Heartburn Symptoms and Causes: Bad Foods or Something More Serious?
By Alameda K. Hartfeldt
Heartburn symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to a sharp pain just below the breastbone or in the ribs. Here are the most common heartburn symptoms:
- Burning sensation in the chest after eating. This can last just a few minutes or several hours
- Chest pain after eating, bending over or lying down
- A hot, sour, acid or salty taste, burning at the back of the throat.
- Difficulty swallowing.
- The feeling of a lump in the throat or chest, like a piece of food is stuck there
- In extreme cases heartburn can cause a chronic cough, sore throat, or hoarseness.
All these symptoms are caused by an accumulation of acid anywhere within the digestive tract and is known as GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) or acid reflux.
Heart problems can also be very similar to heartburn symptoms, so do not continue to put up with the symptoms if you think they may not be caused by heartburn, especially if these do not occur during or immediately after eating.
These following symptoms are more likely to mean cardiac problems, such as angina or heart attack, so do not delay in having them checked out by a physician. If you are overweight it is very hard to distinguish without tests, and you are a prime candidate for heartburn and a heart attack.
- Tightness, pressure or pain usually in the center of the chest.
- Sudden chest pain or increasing pressure
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Radiating pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck, or arms.
- Shortness of breath.
- Cold sweat
What Are the Main Heartburn Causes?
GERD or acid reflux is caused by the liquid contents of the stomach to back up, or reflux into the throat. The strong acids can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus.
The liquid in acid reflux contains both the strong acids in the human stomach that breaks down food and also pepsin which is an enzyme.
If you are really sick & tired of gruelling acid reflux, heartburn or GERD this may be the most critically important message you will ever read. Your acid reflux can be controlled through natural means! If you are sick of your esophagus feeling like it is on fire ... if you are tired of the bitter taste of stomach acid and bile ... if you are fed up with trying to sleep propped up on a mound of pillows ... It can also contain an alarming dark green liquid called bile that has backed up into the stomach from the part of the intestine attached to the base of the stomach.
Bad Heartburn Can Be GERD
GERD is a chronic condition and once you have it, it may be something you suffer from all your life. The lining of the esophagus has become damaged and therefore you are also suffering from esophagitis. Treatment will have to continue for a prolonged period.
Heartburn Relief
Let us assume here that you do not have anything more than a treatable form of heartburn. Reflux of the stomach's acid contents occurs in most people, so it is not an uncommon problem and there are many over the counter medications that work for most people. These usually contain something that neutralizes that acid, and relief can be found almost immediately.
Most heartburn occurs during the daytime, after food and the body can deal with it quite naturally. Human saliva contains bicarbonate and this bicarbonate travels down to the stomach to neutralize acid, every time we swallow.
Most of the damage occurs during the night when we are lying down. The acid pools in the back of esophagus and burns into the lining causing esophagitis. It is a good idea to try to sleep propped up and see if that helps.
If you are suffering from heartburn symptoms and over the counter heartburn remedies are not helping, and you don't want to end up with esophagitis or GERD, we have some helpful information and remedies that may help.
